Dan Grading Success!

August 10, 2009

DSC01612Two club members succesfully passed their dan gradings on the annual karate summer course last week.

Steve Cassapi is the latest club member to have his name added to the black belt ‘roll of honour’, and Gobe Hobona was promoted to 2nd dan black belt.

Both Steve and Gobe put in excellent performances in front of Sensei Andy Sherry and Sensei Frank Brennan. The highlights included a superb rendition of the kata Nijushiho by Gobe, and a very fast ‘dashing in’ punch delivered by Steve in the first nanosecond of his kumite encounter!

All at the club would like to congratulate them on their  achievement.

July 1, 2009

Jonathan Bronw Belt_editedAchieving brown belt is a significant milestone in one’s study of karate, and it was particularly pleasing to see father & son, Paul and Jonathan Osborne, achieve this level on Sunday together.

Pictured  left is a very proud Jonathan being presented with his belt by our grading examiner Sensei Frank Brennan 7th dan.

SOUTH NOTTS SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB

 Ryan’s Success!

Ryan Skilton recently became the latest club member to successfully achieve black belt level. Ryan took the dan grading examination during a national course held in Lichfield on 2nd November. The course was attended by karate enthusiasts from all over the country and Ryan was one of only a handful who made the grade.

Ryan was required to demonstrate his ability in the three major disciplines of karate: kihon (the fundamentals); kata (solo sequences); and kumite (sparring). Each of these disciplines is tested in a vigorous and physically demanding way requiring a high level of physical fitness and conditioning. Assessing Ryan was the chairman of the Karate Union of Great Britain, Sensei Andy Sherry 8th dan, who is the most senior exponent of Shotokan Karate in the country.

Ryan is enormously proud of his achievement and delighted that his name can now be added to the club’s black belt roll of honour which grows year by year.

The club wishes all the community in Keyworth a happy and peaceful Christmas & New Year. Adults, young people and children (min 8 yrs), wishing to learn karate in 2009 may contact the club secretary on (07811) 819221 for more details.

Young Leaders

The club has been very fortunate in recent years to have had enthusiastic youngsters volunteering to assist the instructor in all aspects of running the club. From administrative matters like filling in the register before classes begin, to helping out with the delivery of certain classes or certain parts of classes. I firmly believe that getting involved in this way has massive benefits for the youngsters concerned in terms of confidence and communication skills. Regular readers of this column will recognise the likes of: Ian Lea, Zoe Collard, Alan Lea, Josh Ludlow, and Rory Cave, to name but four! All of them began training at the club as 6 or 7 year olds, and later as teenagers began helping out and were each given the responsibility of being junior club captains. I’m very pleased to say that they are all now at University applying the same positive attitudes to another constructive pastime: higher education!

In recent months 15 year old Rachel Tyler has spent a lot of time assisting the instructor with the delivery of the Friday evening session which is usually a large class made up of all ages and grades. She combined this, like others before her, with achieving various levels within the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. 16 year old Becky Cassapi is the latest member of the club to volunteer her time in this way. She is involved in a young leader programme where bronze, silver and gold awards are based on the number of volunteering hours.  Becky has also put her artistic flare to good use by designing a new track suit top for club members to wear over their karate suits at gradings and competitions.

I’m sure that when Rachel and Becky go off to University there will be other enthusiastic volunteers willing to play a positive role in the future of the club

Adults, young people and children (min age 8yrs) wishing to learn karate in Keyworth may contact the club Secretary on 07811 819221.
